Hard Work Beats Talent

I have been painting since 1989 and have had a lot of artist friends who were more talented than me. It didn’t bug me, but I did envy them sometimes. As the years went by, what happened was, I simply outworked them. I worked harder than they did and many of them went into different fields. Hard work vs. talent is always a topic we have in our heads. I believe hard work always wins over talent. I wasn’t the most talented artist, but I got to where I am now because I outworked many other students in art school. This is why I get to do what I love to do every day: paint!

If you like to paint, draw, or sculpt, and consider yourself an artist, you do not worry about the talent part. If you are reading this, you most likely already have it. Be sure that the idea of being “naturally talented” does not get you down, sometimes this is just a mindset. Hard work is the true separator between the good and the great. Be consistent and paint frequently and regularly. Once I got into the mindset of painting and drawing regularly, I saw a huge difference in my work. Do not underestimate the power of consistency, as it is a huge part of working hard toward becoming a better artist.
