Skies in Motion: Sunrises, Sunsets, and Storms
“Paint the skies you’ve always seen but never known how to capture.”
Clouds are one of the most challenging — and most rewarding — subjects in landscape painting. They move, they shift, they change value from one minute to the next. And when you get them right, they’re what make a painting come alive.
If you’ve ever sat there trying to paint a sky and thought, “Why does mine look flat… or overworked… or just off?” — you’re definitely not alone.
Skies are one of those things that seem simple at first… until you actually try to paint them.
That’s exactly why I put this package together.
Instead of just giving you tips or quick clips, I walk you through four complete oil paintings — from the first stroke to the last — so you can actually see how everything comes together in real time. Not just the brushwork, but the thinking behind it… which is honestly where most people get stuck.
And as you follow along, something starts to click:
It’s NOT about having fancy materials or some secret technique.
It’s about understanding a few key things — how values really work in the sky, how colors shift, and how to simplify what you’re seeing so it actually translates into paint.
That’s the real shift.
Instead of guessing your way through skies (and reworking them over and over), you start to understand why something works—and how to repeat it.
I’ll let you in on something I wish someone had told me years ago: most of the time when a sky goes wrong, it’s not a color problem. It’s a value problem. Even the darkest storm cloud is significantly lighter than your trees and mountains. And the value shifts inside a cloud? They’re whispers — not shouts. Once you see that, everything starts to open up.
In this video package, I take you through my complete process for painting skies that feel atmospheric and true to what you actually see in nature. No formula. Just how I think—what stays, what goes, and what the painting is really about.
You don’t just watch what I do. You hear every decision, every hesitation, every moment where I’m debating with myself whether to keep going or pull back. That’s where the real learning lives.
Small canvases. Simple brushes. The kind of paintings you can sit down with on a Saturday morning and actually finish — and walk away seeing the sky a little differently than you did before.
The principles are the same no matter where you paint. And because you get lifetime access, streaming and downloadable videos, plus all the photo references included… you can take your time with it. Pause, rewind, paint along, come back later — it’s all there when you need it.
If you’ve been avoiding the sky — or painting it and not loving what you get — this is where that starts to change.

“SKIES IN MOTION”
4 VIDEOS

VIDEO 1
SUMMER CLOUDS
60 min
Warm afternoon. Big, generous clouds stacked up against the blue. This is the painting where you learn to see the architecture in the sky — one dominant shape that holds everything together, and smaller shapes that play against it.
I’ll walk you through how to work with a simple color palette, how to mix warm and cool greens that don’t turn to mud, and how to build cloud shapes that feel solid without going stiff. But more than technique, this is the painting where you realize clouds aren’t random. They have weight. Structure. Design.
And once you see that, you start seeing it every time you look up.

SUNSET CLOUDS
60 min
This is the quiet one. Hazy golden light. Values so close together they barely whisper.
This is the painting where most artists reach for more color — brighter oranges, richer purples — and that’s exactly the wrong move. Because light doesn’t come from bright color. It comes from the darkness around it.
I’ll show you how to build a dramatic sky from the ground up — starting with dark-to-light value relationships, controlling color temperature, and creating the illusion of a glow without overworking the paint. That single idea — value over color — will change every sunset you paint from here on.
VIDEO 3
STORMY SKIES
60 min
A storm rolling in. Rain hanging in the air like curtains. Dark mountains pushing up against a turbulent sky. This is the painting where you learn to let go.
To keep your edges soft and your hand loose. To stop trying to illustrate a storm and instead feel it moving through your brush. I’ll show you how to set up the composition with a low horizon to give the sky room to breathe, how to establish your darkest darks first and build every other value from there, and how to work wet into wet so your clouds stay atmospheric and alive.
When it works — when you step back and the whole canvas has that heavy, electric stillness — there’s nothing quite like it. If stormy skies have ever felt too complicated or too unpredictable to paint, this is the demonstration that will change that.

SUNSET RAYS
60 min
This is the painting that scares people. Sun breaking through from behind a cloud, the edges catching fire, warm light spilling across the sky. It’s one of the most tempting subjects in landscape painting — and one of the most easily overdone.
I’ll show you how to approach a dramatic scene like this without letting it turn gimmicky. You’ll watch me establish the dark sky value first — because if that isn’t dark enough, the rim light simply won’t show. From there I’ll walk you through how to handle the transition from cool to warm, how to keep the values inside the cloud close enough to feel dimensional, and how to suggest the sun’s glow without spelling it out.
When it works, the whole painting comes alive in a way that makes you hold your breath. If you’ve ever painted a sunset and felt like it looked too forced or too much — this is the demonstration that shows you a better way.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO START PAINTING SKIES WITH CONFIDENCE:
Four complete, full-length demonstrations in oils: Each one painted from observation on a small canvas, wet into wet, with every decision explained in the moment.
The real conversation at the easel. You’ll hear all my problem solving, the second-guessing, and the hesitations because this is where all the learning lives — and I left every one of them in.
Downloadable videos. Lifetime access. Stream them or download them. No deadlines, no expiration. They’re yours.
All photo references included. Paint along with the exact references I used, or use them as starting points for your own work.
Simple materials. Small canvases (6×8 and 8×10). A basic color palette. A few good brushes. Nothing you need to go buy before you can start.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF…
You’ve avoided painting skies altogether because the gap between what you see and what you can do felt too wide. You don’t need to be advanced. You just need to be willing to pick up your brush and paint along.
