Fear As a Motivator

When I talk about fear, I mean it in the context of creativity and painting (or drawing or sculpture). Fear could be a good motivator. It could be fear of missing out or fear of a tight deadline. It could also be a fear of not getting better. For most of these, you need to pick up the brush. There is no other way than this to get better. I always encourage people to paint from life as much as they can, outside or in the studio. Fear can be a good motivator, but it should not be a constant, because it can easily become a negative thing.

Time is not on our side. If you want to be better at a certain thing and feel it will help with your painting, it may be a reason you are pushing yourself more and spending more time painting. I am not telling you to take time away from important things, but possibly you cut back on certain things to pursue this journey of art. There is no such thing as perfect, but we can always improve from where we are right now.

Don’t try to compare yourself too much to others. I believe original ideas are such a powerful base that you can build your craft upon. Again, fear on many levels is a healthy thing if not abused and controlling you. We do not want it to paralyze you. It can be a good thing when it kicks in from time to time. Painting can be a struggle, it is not always easy. Sometimes it flows better than other days, but that’s the struggle that we all face. We have our good and bad days. That fear can kick in and nudge you in the right direction.
