Intentional Critique

Getting critiqued or criticized by someone can be a good thing, as long as it comes from the right place or intention. We can break somebody’s painting down very easily, but if you really want to help somebody, the criticism or critique should come from the heart.  We really need to know about the person who is critiquing us. Who are they, what is their knowledge or background, and what is their intention? People have criticized my work over the years and I really don’t take it to heart. I have gotten critiqued by some artists I admire and I really pay attention to what they say. Many times, they see things I do not see in my paintings.

The big question of critique is what is the true intention of the person critiquing me?

Getting critiques or criticism is not the easiest as we are very emotional as human beings. But, we have to understand that a good critique- connection really helps. I know when somebody asks me to critique their work, I am not trying to break that person down, I am trying to help and uplift them to make their paintings better.

The big question of critique is what is the true intention of the person critiquing me? Especially, with the internet these days, anyone can chime in! But often times we have no clue who they are. We actually find out more than we think by clicking on their profile or website and seeing what their background is (or lack of). Some people are just plain negative about everything and are just doing it because they had a bad day. But sometimes, there can be really knowledgeable and talented artists who are critiquing us in a genuine and positive way. You just have to do some digging when it comes to the internet. As far as I am concerned, we always want to help other painters improve, not tear them down for no reason!
