Draw Before You Paint
Why do I need to draw if I paint a landscape? My answer is: even if you are painting a landscape or something else, there are measurements to be made prior to painting. You do have to measure , whether you are painting from a photograph or life, you will have to measure spacial relationships. How far is that tree from that bush? Or how far is that tree from that mountain? The problem is, if you have zero drawing skills, you may suffer your way through your paintings. There is a good chance the painting will be off if the drawing is.
“All drawing skills are repetitive measurements that your brain will get trained to see.”
Drawing is the foundation. You do not have to be a master drawer, but you do have to understand proportions and measuring. Don’t just look at something and base it off feeling. You have to measure things out fairly accurate in the beginning, then it will become secondhand.
Measure, measure, measure; don’t just guess. All drawing skills are repetitive measurements that your brain will get trained to see. It does not happen by accident, you have to make some mistakes in the beginning. Painting is a lot of repetitive motion over and over until you get better. But, to get to this stage, you need to know how to measure. You do need to know how to draw even if you are a landscape painter,. You cant skip the drawing part as an artist.
